With its delicate, almost lace-like monochromatic elegance, this silver-colored plate is a unique take on a floral pattern from a dyeing technique originally imported to Japan from India. Sarasa, better known in the West as chintz or calico, is presented here in a luxurious and sophisticated style.
Sarasa patterns were seen in dyed cotton textiles brought to Japan during the Edo period (1603 -1868 CE) from overseas colorful patterns.
The sarasa pattern of this plate is an original arrangement by the first-generation artisan of Kaizan Kiln. Intricate floral motifs are exquisitely formed on porcelain using molds made from meticulously hand-carved plaster models. The design is complemented by the beautifully proportioned size of the plate and the delicate upward curve of the outer edges.
Sized for home use, the plate has been adapted from its original size used for Japanese kappo cuisine about fifty years ago. It is ideal for serving individual portions when hosting guests.
